Building for People, with People

At GH Phipps, we are focused on people – our relationships with clients, professional development of our personnel, and the communities we interact with. We are 100% employee-owned, which means all our employees are working hard to create successful partnerships and deliver an exceptional building experience.

In 2022, we will celebrate 70 years of work along the front range. We continue as one of the largest construction companies in the Colorado region. GH Phipps is known for our work in the healthcare, higher education, K-12, civic and commercial arenas – with a reputation as a trusted partner time and again.

Today, more than three-fourths of our business comes from repeat clients who know that our employee-owners are responsible for upholding our mission to Inspire. Lead. Deliver.

The Construction of GH Phipps

The history of GH Phipps Construction Companies dates back to the 1950s.

Gerald H. Phipps was the son of a representative to the United States Senate, 1919 to 1931. Gerald inherited his father’s interest in philanthropic and civic involvement. The Phipps family had traditionally supported Children’s Hospital Colorado in the early days, making generous financial donations to help the cause. The Phipps family also took ownership of the Denver Broncos from 1961 to 1981.

Gerald began his career in construction, managing the Denver office of Platt Rogers Construction, the firm founded by his uncle. Eventually, Gerald bought the Denver office and began what is now known as GH Phipps Construction Companies.

The firm grew and prospered that first decade, and GH Phipps opened a Colorado Springs office in 1960.

Gerald’s interest in his employees’ success was consistently evident. In 1967, he established a profit-sharing plan allowing employees to share in the success of the company. Before Gerald’s passing in 1993, he created a legacy, transferring the company’s assets to a profit-sharing trust. This trust is now held as an ESOP and shared by more than 200 of the company’s employees.

We realize that even the best organizations need careful and constant nurturing—our word must be as good as our work. It is our company mission to live up to the reputation of our predecessors, prioritizing our clients, employees, and community. Ultimately, we hope to leave things better than we found them.

GH Phipps Leadership Team

When you hire GH Phipps to construct a building, or campus of buildings, you get more than a construction company – you have a team of employee-owners. As such, our leadership supports our people, clients, and community through our company mission: Inspire. Lead. Deliver. Expect an Exceptional Building Experience.

As a general contractor who self-performs work, we are proud of our excellent track record for safety performance. We give applause to our employees executing our training program, encouraging and educating one another, and our outstanding safety performance in the field. It’s not by one individual that we succeed in this, but a culture of care for others resulting in greatness.

Building a Sustainable Future

LEED & NET-ZERO Practices

GH Phipps has committed to sustainable building since 1992. The momentum began to build in 2003, when Boulder Community Hospitals’ Foothills Campus, a GH Phipps project, was certified LEED Silver by the U.S. Green Building Council. It was the first hospital in the country to be certified under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program.

As of 2021, GH Phipps has constructed 30 projects meeting or on track to be LEED-certified, and several others designed and built to meet LEED certification standards. Approximately 26 members of the GH Phipps team are LEED certified, demonstrating a thorough understanding of sustainable building practices and principles and the LEED Rating Systems.

Green construction methods can be integrated into buildings at any stage, from design and construction to renovation and deconstruction. We prefer early participation with the project’s design team to determine which sustainability solutions make the most sense — from setting LEED credit category goals to identifying innovative practices that can make a building easier on the planet.

Learn more about the U.S. Green Building Council, or USGBC, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit coalition of building industry leaders. This program has become the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high-performance green buildings.

We have been honored with three national Association of General Contractors (AGC) Construction Safety Excellence Awards (CSEA) since 2008, and are a participant in OSHA’s and AGC Colorado’s Construction Health and Safety Excellence (CHASE) program, which seeks continuous improvements in safety.

Safety is a Priority

Safety is our culture. The safety of our employees, of our subcontractors, our partners and clients is our absolute top priority. For a general contractor who self-performs work, our track record for safety performance is excellent.

Safety is about our families, our co-workers, and our communities, it encompasses so much more than the project sites we work at daily. Safety is the health of our employees, as well as the correct approach to the environment in which we work.

Our formal safety program is managed by a dedicated staff that oversees implementation of safety initiatives and continually works with field personnel to educate and enforce safety policies. Every employee receives regular safety training, in addition to ongoing training related to our unique project sites. All field supervisors are CPR and First-Aid Certified. Safety instructions and rules of conduct are written into each subcontract, and our safety requirements are reviewed with each subcontractor prior to awarding contracts.
